JOB PURPOSE
The responsibility of a Shop Mechanic is to inspect, maintain, diagnose, and repair heavy equipment such as dump trucks, excavators, bulldozers, and tractor trailers to ensure safe, efficient, and reliable operation. This role includes performing routine preventive maintenance, troubleshooting mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical issues, and completing timely repairs to minimize downtime. Shop Mechanics are also responsible for maintaining accurate service records, following safety protocols, ensuring all work meets company and regulatory standards, and collaborating with operators, supervisors, and parts personnel to prioritize repairs and support overall operational efficiency.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Promotes safety, quality, efficiency, and core values
- Troubleshooting, maintenance, and repair of heavy equipment, vehicles, and other construction equipment
- Diagnose, repair, adjust, and modify components as needed
- Troubleshoot mechanical issues quickly and efficiently, analytical ability to find solutions to difficult technical problems
- Reads, understands, and interprets operating manuals, blueprints, and technical drawings
- Effectively uses diagnostic equipment to assist with troubleshooting and repairs
- Positive interface with shop supervisors and field support personnel
- Prepares proper documentation of work manually and electronically
- Maintains conformity to safety requirements and other regulations
- Occasional travel to jobsites and field locations

QUALIFICATIONS
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
- High School Diploma or equivalent
- Formal mechanical training, apprenticeship, or certification program
- 2+ years of mechanical experience
- Crane experience with CCO certification a plus
REQUIRED COMPETENCIES
- Basic computer knowledge
- Become proficient in equipment manufacture’s software
- Microsoft Office
- Proactive, self-motivated, problem solver
- Ability to work independently, as well as on teams
- Must have a strong diesel engine, hydraulic and electrical background
- Must have existing (or purchase own) hand tools
- Must have valid Driver’s License Required; CDL license a plus
- Must currently be in or willing to join IUOE Local 18
POSITION TYPE/EXPECTED HOURS OF WORK
This is a full-time position, and the work week for employees is normally considered 40 hours Monday through Friday. Flexibility is required to support time-sensitive issues as they arise. However, greater emphasis is placed on meeting the responsibilities assigned to this position.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
The majority of the work is performed in a non-smoking shop environment. The work primarily takes place indoors. However, there might be occasional daily travel based on business needs.

- Sit (or stand) for prolonged periods of time

- Occasionally bend, twist, squat, and kneel
- Occasionally walk up and down the stairs
- Demonstrate visual acuity with or without corrected vision
- Demonstrate hearing acuity with or without corrected hearing
- Must be able to walk outdoor construction sites with uneven terrain and obstacles
